The Mind Stops Arguing and Rests

ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਰਾਮ ਰਮਤ ਮਨੁ ਮਾਨਿਆ ॥
in biDh raam ramat man maani-aa.
Chanting the Lord's Name in this way, my mind is satisfied.
ਗਿਆਨ ਅੰਜਨੁ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦਿ ਪਛਾਨਿਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
gi-aan anjan gur sabad pachhaani-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
I have obtained the ointment of spiritual wisdom, recognizing the Word of the Guru's Shabad. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Turning the Name this way, my mind grows quiet and content — it finally stops arguing and rests.

It is like wisdom laid gently over the eyes so I can see clearly at last, and in that clear seeing I recognize the living word of the teaching.

Practiced this way, the mind stops arguing and rests, and wisdom clears the eyes to see the teaching truly.
The deeper layer

When the Name is kept this way, the mind stops arguing with itself and rests.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. In bidh raam ramat man maani-aa — remembering the One this way, my mind is satisfied.

Maani-aa means settled and in tune. It is close to Mannai in Japji Sahib, which means acceptance. It is not just believing something. It is living from what is true.

Gi-aan anjan gur sabad pachhaani-aa — with the eye-balm of wisdom, I recognize the Guru's Word. Gi-aan is wisdom. Anjan is a soothing balm put on the eyes. Gurbani loves this picture. Think of wiping a foggy window. Suddenly you can see the garden outside. Wisdom clears the eyes so you can see what the shabad, the Guru's Word, points to.

A Question to Sit With

When does your mind finally stop arguing with itself and feel genuinely settled?
