Verse 4 of 9

Let the Tongue Savor the Name Like Something Sweet

ਮਨੁ ਭੂਲੋ ਮਾਇਆ ਘਰਿ ਜਾਇ ॥
man bhoolo maa-i-aa ghar jaa-ay.
The deluded mind enters the house of Maya.
ਕਾਮਿ ਬਿਰੂਧਉ ਰਹੈ ਨ ਠਾਇ ॥
kaam birooDha-o rahai na thaa-ay.
Engrossed in sexual desire, it does not remain steady.
ਹਰਿ ਭਜੁ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਰਸਨ ਰਸਾਇ ॥੩॥
har bhaj paraanee rasan rasaa-ay. ||3||
O mortal, lovingly vibrate the Lord's Name with your tongue. ||3||

In plain words

When the mind loses its way, it wanders off into the house of Maya's glitter.

Caught up in craving, it can't hold still anywhere.

So, dear one, let your tongue delight in saying the One's Name — let it become sweet in your mouth.

A wandering mind can't hold still — so let your tongue delight in the Name, the way you savor something sweet.
The deeper layer

This one says a wandering mind can't sit still, so give your tongue something sweet: the Name.

Man bhoolo maa-i-aa ghar jaa-ay — the lost mind moves into the house of maa-i-aa, the glitter of passing things. Kaam birooDha-o rahai na thaa-ay — tangled in kaam, strong craving, it cannot stay steady anywhere.

Then comes the gentle cure. Har bhaj paraanee rasan rasaa-ay — O person, let your tongue enjoy the Name. Make it delicious.

Remembering the Name, naam simran, is offered here as a delight, never as a grim chore. Think of how your tongue loves a slice of mango on a hot day. The verse invites the tongue to enjoy the Name like that.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a word, a song, or a phrase that makes you feel steadier just by saying it?
