Verse 2 of 10

There Is No Second; Only the One Shines in All

ਦੂਜਾ ਕਉਣੁ ਕਹਾ ਨਹੀ ਕੋਈ ॥
doojaa ka-un kahaa nahee ko-ee.
Whom should I call the second, when there is only the One?
ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਏਕੁ ਨਿਰੰਜਨੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sabh meh ayk niranjan so-ee. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The One Immaculate Lord is pervading among all. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whom could I possibly call the second one? There is no second. There is only the One, shining spotless and unbroken inside every single thing that lives.

There is no “second” — only the One, shining spotless inside everything.
The deeper layer

There is no "second" anywhere; the One shines in everything.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Doojaa kaun? — who could be the second? The answer is: no one.

Sabh meh ayk niranjan — the One is in everything. Niranjan means spotless, with no stain at all.

This is Ik Onkar, "One Creator, One Oneness," said in plain words. It is not one god among many others. It is Oneness as the only thing that is truly real.

Think of the ocean and its waves. There are countless waves, but they are all one ocean.

A Question to Sit With

If the same One is inside everything, does that change how you look at a stranger?
