Subduing ego, practice pure actions. ||7||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Serving the teacher means turning the living Word over and over in your heart. Quiet the “me first” feeling, and your doing becomes clean and true.

Serving the teacher means turning the Word over in your heart until doing becomes clean.
The deeper layer

Serving the Guru means thinking deeply about the Word.

Gur kee sayvaa sabad veechaar — the Guru's service is reflecting on the sabad, the Word. It is like a favorite song you play again and again until you know every line by heart.

Then ha-umai maaray — the ego is quieted. Ha-umai is the "me first" feeling, the sense of being separate from everyone else. When it quiets, karnee saar — your actions become clean and good.

Ego is like an illness that needs healing. It is not a crime that needs punishing.

A Question to Sit With

What does “doing something cleanly and truly” mean to you?
