ਸਬਦਿ ਮਰੈ ਤਿਸੁ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
sabad marai tis nij ghar vaasaa.
One who dies in the Shabad abides in his own home within.
ਆਵੈ ਨ ਜਾਵੈ ਚੂਕੈ ਆਸਾ ॥
aavai na jaavai chookai aasaa.
He does not come or go in reincarnation, and his hopes are subdued.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥੭॥
gur kai sabad kamal pargaasaa. ||7||
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, his heart-lotus blossoms forth. ||7||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The one who quiets the ego through the Word finds a home right inside themselves. They stop wandering restlessly, their endless wanting settles, and through the Word the heart opens like a flower to the sun.
Quiet the ego through the Word, and the heart opens like a flower to the sun.
Shabad marai — “dies in the Word,” meaning the ego is stilled; we render as quieting the ego, not literal death. Nij ghar vaasaa — dwelling in one’s own true home within. Chookai aasaa — restless craving ends. Kamal pargaasaa — the heart-lotus blossoms, a classic image of awakening opening.
