O Nanak, those detached recluses who meet the Lord are so very rare. ||8||7||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Look around: so much of life runs on hope one moment and letdown the next, driven by craving and anger, by hunger and thirst that never quite fill. Rare and precious is the free-hearted one who, letting all that go, actually meets the One.
Much of life swings between hope and letdown; rare is the free heart that meets the One.
The closing. Jo deesai so aas niraasaa — all that is seen swings between hope and despair, pushed by kaam (craving), krodh (anger), and unending bhookh pi-aasaa (hunger and thirst). Naanak birlay mileh udaasaa — rare is the udaasee, the detached free-hearted one, who meets the One. Udaasaa here is inner freedom, not gloom.
