Rest Your Eyes on the One and Your Words Turn Sweet

ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ਸੰਤੋਖੇ ਏਕ ਲਿਵ ਤਾਰਾ ॥
naytar santokhay ayk liv taaraa.
My eyes are contented with the constant love of the One Lord.
ਜਿਹਵਾ ਸੂਚੀ ਹਰਿ ਰਸ ਸਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
jihvaa soochee har ras saaraa. ||2||
My tongue is purified by the most sublime essence of the Lord. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My eyes rest content, fixed on the One with steady love. And my speech turns clean and sweet, savoring the taste of the One in every word.

Rest your eyes on the One with steady love, and your words turn clean and sweet.
The deeper layer

This one says that when your eyes rest on the One, your words turn sweet.

Naytar santokhay ayk liv taaraa — "my eyes are content, held in steady love of the One." Naytar means eyes. Santokh means contentment. Liv is attention held without a break.

Jihvaa soochee har ras saaraa — "my tongue is made pure by the sweetest taste of the One." Har ras is the taste of the One, the joy of the divine.

Think of how your voice softens when you look at a baby or a puppy. What your eyes rest on changes how you speak. Here, both looking and speaking turn toward the One.

A Question to Sit With

How might your words change if you tasted them before letting them out?
