When the Teacher Clarifies, Understanding Dawns

ਗੁਰੁ ਸਮਝਾਵੈ ਸੋਝੀ ਹੋਈ ॥
gur samjhaavai sojhee ho-ee.
When the Guru instructs, understanding is obtained.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਵਿਰਲਾ ਬੂਝੈ ਕੋਈ ॥੫॥
gurmukh virlaa boojhai ko-ee. ||5||
How rare is that Gurmukh who understands. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When the teacher makes it clear, real understanding dawns. And yet how rare it is — someone turned toward the teaching who truly gets it.

When the teacher makes it clear, understanding dawns — though it is rare and precious.
The deeper layer

This one says that when the Guru explains, real understanding dawns.

Gur samjhaavai sojhee ho-ee — "when the Guru explains, understanding comes." Sojhee is understanding.

Gurmukh virlaa boojhai ko-ee — "rare is the gurmukh who truly understands." A gurmukh is someone who faces the Guru's teaching.

Think of a math teacher showing a hard problem on the board. Many copy it down. Only a few truly get it. And anyone can, if they lean in.

This is not a judgment on others. It is an honest word about how rare deep understanding is. And it is open to everyone who turns toward it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you only truly understood once someone patiently explained it?
