Verse 7 of 10

Without Understanding, a Person Grows Harsh and Lost

ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਰਾਖਹੁ ਰਖਵਾਲੇ ॥
kar kirpaa raakho rakhvaalay.
Show Your Mercy, and save me, O Savior Lord!
ਬਿਨੁ ਬੂਝੇ ਪਸੂ ਭਏ ਬੇਤਾਲੇ ॥੬॥
bin boojhay pasoo bha-ay baytaalay. ||6||
Without understanding, people become beasts and demons. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Pour Your kindness over me and keep me safe, O Protector. Without this understanding, a person can lose their way and grow harsh and lost.

Keep me safe, O Protector; without understanding, a person can grow harsh and lost.
The deeper layer

This one is a prayer for protection, and a reminder of what happens without understanding.

Kar kirpaa raakho rakhvaalay — "show Your kindness, and save me, O Protector." Kirpaa is kindness, grace. Rakhvaalaa is the One who keeps us safe.

Bin boojhay pasoo bha-ay baytaalay — "without understanding, people become beasts and demons." Pasoo means animal. Baytaalay means spirits that wander lost. In plain words, a person can grow harsh and lost.

Think of a phone that has lost its signal. It keeps searching and draining, cut off from what it needs.

The point is being cut off from the One. And that can always be healed.

A Question to Sit With

What helps you find your way back when you feel harsh or lost?
