paranvat naanak ham taa kay daas. ||9||8||
- prays Nanak, I am his servant. ||9||8||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Whoever carries Truth in their heart, and a love that is real and lasting — I would gladly be their servant. That, Nanak says humbly, is who I want to belong to.

Whoever carries Truth and real love in their heart — I would gladly serve them.
The deeper layer

The song ends with Nanak longing to serve anyone whose heart holds truth.

Saach ridai sach paraym nivaas — "Truth in the heart, and true love living there." Nivaas means a home, a place to live.

Paranvat naanak ham taa kay daas — "Nanak prays: I am their servant." Here Guru Nanak names himself.

The song ends where it began. The first verse spoke of meeting a daas, a devoted servant. Now the speaker longs to be that servant, serving the truthful-hearted.

Think of a young helper in the langar, the Gurdwara's free kitchen. They are glad just to serve alongside the kindest people they know.

A Question to Sit With

Who do you know that carries real truth and love — and what could you learn from them?
