The stories remember a cruel and arrogant king, Harnaakhash, who did harm. The One — who quietly undoes all pride — reached out with kindness and protected the faithful child Prahlaad.
The One quietly undoes all pride and reaches out to protect the faithful.
The Prahlaad story: the tyrant Harnaakhash persecutes his devoted son. We foreground the rescue — parahlaad udhaaray kirpaa dhaaree, mercy saving the child — and name God as garab par-haaree, the undoer of pride. The violent killing of the tyrant (next pauri’s theme too) is set aside; the hopeful, protective heart of the story is kept.
A Question to Sit With
Who protects the ones who can’t protect themselves — and how could you be that person?
