Verse 10 of 13

Make the Innocent Suffer and You Carry the Suffering

ਬੂਡਾ ਦੁਰਜੋਧਨੁ ਪਤਿ ਖੋਈ ॥
boodaa durjoDhan pat kho-ee.
Sinking down, Durodhan lost his honor.
ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਕਰਤਾ ਸੋਈ ॥
raam na jaani-aa kartaa so-ee.
He did not know the Creator Lord.
ਜਨ ਕਉ ਦੂਖਿ ਪਚੈ ਦੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੯॥
jan ka-o dookh pachai dukh ho-ee. ||9||
One who makes the Lord's humble servant suffer, shall himself suffer and rot. ||9||

In plain words

Durjodhan sank down and lost his honor.

He never came to know the Creator.

Whoever makes a humble, innocent person suffer only ends up carrying that suffering themselves.

Whoever sets out to make an innocent person suffer ends up carrying that suffering themselves.
The deeper layer

Hurting an innocent person comes back to the one who does it.

Durjodhan is the proud prince of the Mahabharata, India's great old story of cousins at war. Boodaa durjodhan pat kho-ee — he sank and lost his honor. Why? Raam na jaani-aa kartaa so-ee — he never knew the Creator.

Then comes a hard line: jan ka-o dookh pachai dukh ho-ee — whoever makes the One's humble servant suffer will suffer too. This is a sober warning, not a curse. Cruelty tends to come back around, like a ball thrown hard at a wall that bounces straight back. It is said calmly, with no gloating.

If someone is being unkind to you or hurting you, that is never something you have to accept. Telling a grown-up you trust is always the right thing to do.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever noticed unkindness quietly come back around to the person who gave it?
