Verse 11 of 13

A Small Slip Unexamined Brings Long Regret

ਜਨਮੇਜੈ ਗੁਰ ਸਬਦੁ ਨ ਜਾਨਿਆ ॥
janmayjai gur sabad na jaani-aa.
Janameja did not know the Word of the Guru's Shabad.
ਕਿਉ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਭਰਮਿ ਭੁਲਾਨਿਆ ॥
ki-o sukh paavai bharam bhulaani-aa.
Deluded by doubt, how could he find peace?
ਇਕੁ ਤਿਲੁ ਭੂਲੇ ਬਹੁਰਿ ਪਛੁਤਾਨਿਆ ॥੧੦॥
ik til bhoolay bahur pachhutaani-aa. ||10||
Making a mistake, for even an instant, you shall regret and repent later on. ||10||

In plain words

Another story tells of Janameja, who never learned the Word and so, lost in confusion, could find no peace. Even a small slip, unexamined, can bring long regret later on.

Even a small slip, left unexamined, can bring long regret; the Word keeps us steady.
The deeper layer

Janameja (Janamejaya): gur shabad na jaani-aa — never knew the Word, so bharam bhulaani-aa, lost in doubt. Ik til bhoolay bahur pachhutaani-aa — even an instant’s error brings later regret. We keep this as a gentle caution about the cost of straying from wisdom, not a threat.

A Question to Sit With

What small habit, if you looked at it honestly now, would save you regret later?
