Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 249
Verse 5 of 9

Every Comfort Leaves the Body Heavy Without the Name

ਦਰ ਘਰ ਮਹਲਾ ਸੇਜ ਸੁਖਾਲੀ ॥
dar ghar mehlaa sayj sukhaalee.
In his hearth and home, in his palace, upon his soft and comfortable bed,
ਅਹਿਨਿਸਿ ਫੂਲ ਬਿਛਾਵੈ ਮਾਲੀ ॥
ahinis fool bichhaavai maalee.
day and night, the flower-girls scatter flower petals;
ਬਿਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮ ਸੁ ਦੇਹ ਦੁਖਾਲੀ ॥੪॥
bin har naam so dayh dukhaalee. ||4||
but without the Lord's Name, the body is miserable. ||4||

In plain words

I might have a grand home and a soft, comfortable bed.

Flower petals might be scattered on it day and night.

And still, without the Name of the One, the body itself feels heavy and unwell.

Every comfort for the body still leaves it heavy without the Name.
The deeper layer

A soft bed and a grand house cannot heal the ache of the heart.

Dar ghar mehlaa sayj sukhaalee — a home, a palace, a soft and comfortable bed. Ahinis fool bichhaavai maalee — ahinis, day and night, flowers are scattered on it. Bin har naam so dayh dukhaalee — without the Name, that body is in dukh, pain and unease.

Think of lying on the comfiest couch while feeling sad inside. The cushions cannot reach the sadness. Comfort for the body is not enough for the ache of the heart.

A Question to Sit With

Is there a kind of tiredness that a comfortable bed can’t fix?
