Power and Parade Are Empty Show Without the One

ਹੈਵਰ ਗੈਵਰ ਨੇਜੇ ਵਾਜੇ ॥
haivar gaivar nayjay vaajay.
Horses, elephants, lances, marching bands,
ਲਸਕਰ ਨੇਬ ਖਵਾਸੀ ਪਾਜੇ ॥
laskar nayb khavaasee paajay.
armies, standard bearers, royal attendants and ostentatious displays
ਬਿਨੁ ਜਗਦੀਸ ਝੂਠੇ ਦਿਵਾਜੇ ॥੫॥
bin jagdees jhoothay divaajay. ||5||
- without the Lord of the Universe, these undertakings are all useless. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

I might have fine horses and elephants, lances and marching bands.

I might have whole armies, flag-bearers and attendants.

Without the One who holds the universe, all of it is just empty show.

Power and parade are just empty show without the One who holds the universe.
The deeper layer

Power and parades are empty show without the One.

Haivar gaivar nayjay vaajay — horses, elephants, lances and marching bands. Laskar nayb khavaasee paajay — armies, flag-bearers, attendants and grand display. Laskar means army. Bin jagdees jhoothay divaajay — without the Lord of the universe, all this is jhoothay, false and hollow.

Think of a giant parade balloon. It is big and bright, and it is full of air. Power and spectacle now join fine clothes in the list of things that cannot satisfy.

A Question to Sit With

What looks impressive from the outside but might feel hollow inside?
