Only the Word Can Tame the Restless Mind

ga-orhee gu-aarayree mehlaa 3.
Gauree Gwaarayree, Third Mehl:
man maaray Dhaat mar jaa-ay.
When someone kills and subdues his own mind, his wandering nature is also subdued.
bin moo-ay kaisay har paa-ay.
Without such a death, how can one find the Lord?
man marai daaroo jaanai ko-ay.
Only a few know the medicine to kill the mind.
man sabad marai boojhai jan so-ay. ||1||
One whose mind dies in the Word of the Shabad, understands Him. ||1||

In plain words

When you tame your own mind, its endless wandering settles too. Without that kind of dying, how could anyone find the One? Only a few know the medicine that quiets the mind -- and the mind that dies into the Word finally understands.

Tame the restless mind and its wandering stops -- and only the Word can do the taming.
The deeper layer

The shabad's theme: killing the mind -- not the brain but the restless ego-mind. This is jeevat marnaa applied to the mind specifically. The medicine is rare knowledge: the mind dies only in the Shabad.

A Question to Sit With

What helps your mind stop wandering and grow quiet?
