Thanks to the One Who Shows the Way and Joins Me

ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਵਾਟ ਦਿਖਾਵੈ ॥

Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who shows us the Way.
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਸੁਣਾਵੈ ॥
tis ka-o vaahu vaahu je sabad sunaavai.
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who teaches the Word of the Shabad.
ਤਿਸ ਕਉ ਵਾਹੁ ਵਾਹੁ ਜਿ ਮੇਲਿ ਮਿਲਾਵੈ ॥੬॥
tis ka-o vaahu vaahu je mayl milaavai. ||6||
Waaho! Waaho! - Hail, hail, to the one who unites me in the Lord's Union. ||6||

In plain words

Wonder and thanks to the one who shows me the way! Wonder and thanks to the one who lets me hear the living Word! Wonder and thanks to the one who joins me back to the One!

Wonder and thanks to the one who shows the way, sounds the Word, and joins me to the One!
The deeper layer

This is a burst of thanks for the one who guides us to the One.

Vaahu vaahu is a cry of wonder and praise, a little like "Wow!" It comes from the same pure awe as Wahe, the wonder in Waheguru.

Three times Guru Nanak gives thanks. Tis ka-o vaahu vaahu je vaat dikhaavai — wow to the one who shows the way. Then wow to the one who lets us hear the shabad, the living Word. Then wow to the one who joins us with the One.

After the careful warnings earlier in the shabad, joy breaks through. Think of a friend who finally helps you crack a hard puzzle. You cannot help shouting "Yes!" Praise here is simply the heart overflowing.

A Question to Sit With

Who has helped show you the way — and have you ever thanked them with your whole heart?
