What We Let In Through Eyes and Ears Robs Our Peace

ਕਾਲੁ ਜਾਲੁ ਜਿਹਵਾ ਅਰੁ ਨੈਣੀ ॥
kaal jaal jihvaa ar nainee.
The trap of Death is hanging over their tongues and eyes.
ਕਾਨੀ ਕਾਲੁ ਸੁਣੈ ਬਿਖੁ ਬੈਣੀ ॥
kaanee kaal sunai bikh bainee.
Death is over their ears, when they hear talk of evil.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਮੂਠੇ ਦਿਨੁ ਰੈਣੀ ॥੮॥
bin sabdai moothay din rainee. ||8||
Without the Shabad, they are plundered, day and night. ||8||

In plain words

When our senses chase only what is harsh or hollow — sharp words, ugly sights, poison-talk in our ears — we get quietly robbed of our peace, day and night. Without the words of the teaching, that theft goes on unnoticed.

What we let into our eyes and ears can quietly rob our peace; the teaching keeps us awake to it.
The deeper layer

This one says that what we let in through our eyes and ears can rob our peace.

Kaal jaal jihvaa ar nainee — the trap of death hangs over the tongue and the eyes. Kaanee kaal sunai bikh bainee — it hangs over ears that listen to bikh bainee, poison words. The picture is not a scary death-messenger. It is the senses caught in things that make us smaller: gossip, cruel talk, ugly sights.

Bin sabdai moothay din rainee — without the Word, they are robbed day and night. What gets stolen is inner peace. The thief is not a monster. It is simply not paying attention. Think of a phone whose battery drains all day from apps you forgot were open.

Without the Word to keep us awake, the robbing is quiet and steady. The teaching helps us notice what drains us, and stop feeding it.

A Question to Sit With

What are some things you hear or see that leave you feeling worse — and what might you let in instead?
