The way a dairy farmer watches over the cows all day, feeding them and keeping them safe, that is how the One cherishes and protects us — through the night and through the day. And so the soul is filled with peace.
The hymn opens with one of Nanak's tenderest images: ji-o gaa-ee ka-o go-ilee — as the go-ilee, the herdsman, cares for his cows, so the One paaleh raakh layhi, nourishes and keeps us, ahinis, night and day. It is a picture of being watched over with steady, ordinary devotion — not grand or dramatic, but the daily, faithful care of someone who never stops paying attention. And its fruit is aatam sukh Dhaaraa — the soul settled in peace. This is Gauree Bairaagan, the reflective, tender strain of the raag.
Who watches over you every day in small, steady ways that you might take for granted?
