Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Keep me safe here and everywhere, You who are so gentle with the humble. I come and sit in Your shelter — please look upon me with Your kind and grace-filled glance.

Come into the shelter of the One who is gentle with the small, and hope for the grace-glance.
The deeper layer

This is the Rahao, the heart-cry of the hymn. It ut raakho — "protect me here and hereafter," in this world and beyond. Deen dayaalaa — the One merciful to the meek, tender toward the small and lowly; this is Nanak foregrounding the honoring of the humble. Sarnaagat — coming into sarnaa, sanctuary, refuge — is the trusting posture of the whole hymn. And nadar nihaalaa is the longing for the nadar, the Glance of Grace, that blesses simply by falling upon you. Shelter sought, and grace hoped for.

A Question to Sit With

Where do you go, or who do you go to, when you just want to feel safe and looked after?
