The Palace of the Boundless One Is Inside You

ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਮਹਲੁ ਅਪਾਰ ਕੋ ਅਪਰੰਪਰੁ ਸੋਈ ॥
nij ghar mahal apaar ko aprampar so-ee.
The Mansion of the Infinite Lord's Presence is within the home of one's own being. He is beyond any boundaries.
ਬਿਨੁ ਸਬਦੈ ਥਿਰੁ ਕੋ ਨਹੀ ਬੂਝੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਈ ॥੫॥
bin sabdai thir ko nahee boojhai sukh ho-ee. ||5||
Without the Word of the Shabad, nothing shall endure. Through understanding, peace is obtained. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

The palace of the boundless One is right within the home of your own being — that One who has no edges and no limit. Without the Word of the teaching, nothing stays steady; but through understanding, peace comes.

The palace of the boundless One is inside your own being; understanding opens its door to peace.
The deeper layer

Nij ghar mahal apaar — the mahal, the palace, of the apaar, the infinite One, is in nij ghar, the home of your own being. Nanak's constant inward turn: you do not travel to the One; you settle into where it already dwells (echoing Sahaj and the nij ghar theme). Aprampar — beyond all bounds. And bin sabdai thir ko nahee — without the Word, nothing is thir, stable; but boojhai sukh ho-ee, through understanding, peace arrives. The palace is inside; understanding is the key that opens its door.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to look for peace inside yourself instead of somewhere far away?
