Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 256
Verse 8 of 9

Set the Me Aside and Find the Word Within

ਗੁਰਮਤਿ ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਵੀਸਰੈ ਸਹਜੇ ਪਤਿ ਪਾਈਐ ॥
gurmat naam na veesrai sehjay pat paa-ee-ai.
Follow the Guru's Teachings, and do not forget the Naam, the Name of the Lord; you shall automatically obtain honor.
ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਬਦੁ ਨਿਧਾਨੁ ਹੈ ਮਿਲਿ ਆਪੁ ਗਵਾਈਐ ॥੭॥
antar sabad niDhaan hai mil aap gavaa-ee-ai. ||7||
Deep within the self is the treasure of the Shabad; it is obtained only by eradicating selfishness and conceit. ||7||

In plain words

Follow the teaching, and do not let the Name slip from your heart — then honor comes to you naturally, with no strain. Deep inside you lies the treasure of the Word; you find it the moment you set the small "me" aside.

The treasure of the Word is already inside you; set the small "me" aside, and you find it.
The deeper layer

Gurmat naam na veesrai — walking the teaching so the Name is never forgotten — brings sehjay pat, honor arriving sehjay, with natural ease (sahaj), not chased. And the jewel: antar sabad nidhaan — the treasure of the Word is within you already, a nidhaan, a treasure-store. How to reach it? Mil aap gavaa-ee-ai — by losing the aap, the ego-self (softened from "eradicating conceit" toward simply setting the small self aside). The treasure was never far; only the ego stood in the doorway.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing might already be inside you, waiting for you to stop getting in your own way?
