Quiet the Me-First Voice and Lift Everyone Near

ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਸਾਚਾ ਜਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰੈ ॥
so jan saachaa je ha-umai maarai.
Those humble beings are true, who conquer their ego.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਪੰਚ ਸੰਘਾਰੈ ॥
gur kai sabad panch sanghaarai.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they conquer the five thieves.
ਆਪਿ ਤਰੈ ਸਗਲੇ ਕੁਲ ਤਾਰੈ ॥੪॥
aap tarai saglay kul taarai. ||4||
They save themselves, and save all their generations as well. ||4||

In plain words

The truest person is the one who has quieted that "me-first" voice inside. With the teaching as their strength, they master the five restless pulls — wanting, anger, greed, clinging, and pride. And here is the wonder: in freeing themselves, they lift up everyone around them, whole families, whole lines of people, carried along.

Quiet the "me-first" voice, and you don't just free yourself — you lift everyone around you.
The deeper layer

The truest person is the one who quiets the ego, and their goodness lifts everyone around them.

So jan saachaa je ha-umai maarai — that person is true who conquers haumai, the me-first ego. Saachaa means true, real, genuine.

Gur kai sabad panch sanghaarai — through the Guru's Word, they overcome the five. The panch, the five, are the thieves inside every heart: kaam, desire; krodh, anger; lobh, greed; moh, clinging; and ahankaar, pride. They are called thieves because they quietly steal our peace.

The last line reaches wide. Aap tarai saglay kul taarai — they cross over themselves, and carry their whole family line across too. Think of a pebble dropped in a pond. The ripples spread all the way to the edges. Goodness is never private. It ripples outward.

A Question to Sit With

Can you think of one person whose goodness has quietly lifted a whole family or group?
