Enjoy the Play, but Remember It's a Play

ਮਾਇਆ ਮੋਹਿ ਨਟਿ ਬਾਜੀ ਪਾਈ ॥
maa-i-aa mohi nat baajee paa-ee.
The Actor has staged the drama of emotional attachment to Maya.
ਮਨਮੁਖ ਅੰਧ ਰਹੇ ਲਪਟਾਈ ॥
manmukh anDh rahay laptaa-ee.
The self-willed manmukhs cling blindly to it.
ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਅਲਿਪਤ ਰਹੇ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
gurmukh alipat rahay liv laa-ee. ||5||
The Gurmukhs remain detached, and lovingly attune themselves to the Lord. ||5||

In plain words

The whole world is like a great play, and it is easy to get so lost in the show that you forget it's a play. Some grip the scenery tightly, sure it's the only real thing. But others watch with love in their hearts, enjoying it fully while remembering what's underneath — and that keeps them free and light.

Enjoy the play fully — but remember it's a play, and you stay free.
The deeper layer

The world is like a play: enjoy it, but remember it is a play.

Maa-i-aa mohi nat baajee paa-ee — the Actor has staged the drama of attachment to maa-i-aa. Maa-i-aa is the shimmering, ever-changing look of the world.

Manmukh andh rahay laptaa-ee — the manmukh cling to it blindly. A manmukh is someone who faces only their own wants. They mistake the play for the whole truth.

Gurmukh alipat rahay liv laa-ee — the gurmukh stay unstuck, with their love tuned to the One. A gurmukh is someone who faces the Guru's teaching. Alipat means untouched, unstuck. Think of watching a great movie. You laugh and you cry, but when the lights come on, you remember who you are. The gurmukh are present and loving, but the show does not own them. Their love rests on what is real underneath.

The point is not to reject the world. It is to hold it lightly.

A Question to Sit With

What's something you love that's more fun when you don't grip it too tightly?
