No One Is Beyond Renewal

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਅਪਰਾਧੀ ਸੀਧੇ ॥
gurmukh paraanee apraaDhee seeDhay.
Becoming Gurmukh, the sinful mortals are purified.
ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਰੀਧੇ ॥
gur kai sabad antar sahj reeDhay.
Through the Word of the Guru's Shabad, they find intuitive peace and poise deep within.
ਮੇਰਾ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਪਾਇਆ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਸਬਦਿ ਸੀਧੇ ॥੨॥
mayraa parabh paa-i-aa gur kai sabad seeDhay. ||2||
I have found my God, through the Guru's Shabad, and I have been reformed. ||2||

In plain words

Even someone who has made mistakes can be made new. Turn toward the teaching, let the Word settle deep inside, and a quiet steadiness grows there. "I found the One," you can say, "right through the Word — and I was remade."

No one is beyond renewal — turn toward the teaching and a mistaken heart is remade.
The deeper layer

No one is too far gone to be made new.

Gurmukh paraanee apraadhee seedhay — even apraadhee, people who have done wrong, are seedhay, set straight and made whole, when they turn toward the Guru. This is the mercy of the shabad. Think of a bent bicycle wheel. A patient mechanic works on it, spoke by spoke, until it rolls straight again.

Gur kai sabad antar sahj reedhay — through the Guru's Word, sahj, a calm and natural ease, ripens deep inside. Then the last line speaks as "I." Mayraa parabh paa-i-aa — I have found my God. This is someone telling their own story, not a theory. I was set right, they say, and I am saying so.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt "made new" after doing something wrong and truly turning around? What did that feel like?
