Verse 4 of 9

When the Heart Is Open, the One Does the Joining

ਸਤਿਗੁਰਿ ਮੇਲੇ ਪ੍ਰਭਿ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥
satgur maylay parabh aap milaa-ay.
God Himself unites us in Union with the True Guru,
ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਸਾਚੇ ਕੈ ਮਨਿ ਭਾਏ ॥
mayray parabh saachay kai man bhaa-ay.
when we become pleasing to the Mind of my True God.
ਹਰਿ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਵਹਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸੁਭਾਏ ॥੩॥
har gun gaavahi sahj subhaa-ay. ||3||
They sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord, in the poise of celestial peace. ||3||

In plain words

When you become ready — when your heart is open — the One brings you to a true teacher and then to itself. And what flows out of you then is song: praising the One in a calm, natural gladness that needs no forcing.

When the heart is open, the One does the joining — and song flows out on its own.
The deeper layer

When the heart is open, the One itself does the joining.

Satgur maylay parabh aap milaa-ay — the One brings us to the Satgur, the true Guru, and then joins us to itself. Grace does the joining. We receive it. We do not build it ourselves.

Mayray parabh saachay kai man bhaa-ay — when we become pleasing to the Mind of the True One. This means becoming open and ready, not earning a prize. Think of a flower. It cannot make the sun rise, but it can open when the sun comes.

Har gun gaavahi sahj subhaa-ay — then they sing the One's praises in sahj, calm and natural ease, with no forcing. The song is the sign that the joining has happened.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt so glad that gratitude or song just came out of you without trying?
