Verse 6 of 9

In the Shelter, Fear Stops Stalking You

ਜਮੂਆ ਨ ਜੋਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਸਰਣਾਈ ॥
jamoo-aa na johai har kee sarnaa-ee.
The Messenger of Death does not catch sight of those who enter the Sanctuary of the Lord.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਸਚਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥
ha-umai maar sach liv laa-ee.
Subduing egotism, they lovingly center their consciousness on the True Lord.
ਸਦਾ ਰਹੈ ਹਰਿ ਨਾਮਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਈ ॥੫॥
sadaa rahai har naam liv laa-ee. ||5||
They keep their consciousness constantly focused on the Lord's Name. ||5||

In plain words

Step into the shelter of the One and the fear of ending no longer stalks you. Quiet the "me-first" voice, tune your love to the truth, and keep your attention resting on the Name — steady, safe, at home.

In the shelter of the One, fear stops stalking you and attention rests, safe and at home.
The deeper layer

In the shelter of the One, fear stops following you around.

Jamoo-aa na johai har kee sarnaa-ee — the messenger of death does not even look at those in the One's sarnaa-ee, shelter. It means safety from the fear of ending. Picture a child running into a parent's arms during a thunderstorm. The thunder still rolls, but the fear lets go.

Ha-umai maar sach liv laa-ee — quieting ha-umai, the "me-first" self, they tune their love to the True One. Liv laa-ee comes twice. It means attention resting on the Name. That is what a sheltered heart looks like: settled and calm, not tense and on guard.

A Question to Sit With

Where or with whom do you feel so safe that your worries finally quiet down?
