Verse 2 of 9

When Doubt Lifts, a Natural Music Rises

ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਪ੍ਰਾਣੀ ਭਰਮੁ ਗਵਾਇ ॥
gurmukh paraanee bharam gavaa-ay.
Those mortals who become Gurmukh give up their doubts.
ਸਹਜ ਧੁਨਿ ਉਪਜੈ ਹਰਿ ਲਿਵ ਲਾਇ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
sahj Dhun upjai har liv laa-ay. ||1|| rahaa-o.
The celestial music wells up, when they lovingly attune their consciousness to the Lord. ||1||Pause||

In plain words

Turn toward the teaching and the fog of doubt just lifts. A quiet, natural music rises up inside — the sound of a heart tuning its love to the One.

When doubt lifts, a quiet natural music rises — the sound of a heart tuned to the One.
The deeper layer

This is the center of the shabad: when doubt lifts, a quiet music rises inside.

This line is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center the shabad turns around. Gurmukh paraanee bharam gavaa-ay — the gurmukh, the person who faces the teaching, lets go of bharam, doubt.

Then sahj Dhun upjai — sahj Dhun, a natural, easy inner music, wells up. It rises the moment love is tuned to the One, har liv laa-ay.

Doubt lifting and music rising are one movement, not two. Think of fog clearing off a lake at dawn. Suddenly you hear the birds that were singing all along. When the fog clears, the melody is simply heard.

A Question to Sit With

When a worry finally clears, what does the lightness that follows feel like?
