Remembrance Opens the Circle Into a Road

ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਕਾਲੈ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰਾ ॥
tarai gun kaalai kee sir kaaraa.
Those who are controlled by the three qualities have death hovering over their heads.
ਨਾਮੁ ਨ ਚੇਤਹਿ ਉਪਾਵਣਹਾਰਾ ॥
naam na cheeteh upaavanhaaraa.
They do not remember the Name of the Creator Lord.
ਮਰਿ ਜੰਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਵਾਰੋ ਵਾਰਾ ॥੨॥
mar jameh fir vaaro vaaraa. ||2||
They die, and are reborn, over and over, again and again. ||2||

In plain words

When the three moods run the show, the Name is forgotten.

Then life keeps circling the same worn tracks, round and round, never quite arriving.

Forget the Maker and life circles the same tracks; remembrance opens the circle into a road.
The deeper layer

This one says that forgetting the Maker keeps life going in circles, and remembering opens a road.

Tarai gun kaalai kee sir kaaraa — those ruled by the three moods live under kaal. Kaal means time, change, and endings. Naam na cheeteh upaavanhaaraa — they do not remember the upaavanhaaraa, the Creator. Mar jameh fir vaaro vaaraa — dying and being born, over and over again.

The picture to hold is not fear of that cycle. It is life circling the same worn track, round and round. Think of a runner doing laps who never leaves the stadium.

Remembering the Maker opens the circle into a road that goes somewhere. Forgetting the Name is what keeps the loop closed.

A Question to Sit With

What habit or worry do you notice yourself circling back to? What might open it into a way forward?
