You Can Be Free Right Here in This Life

ਜੀਵਨ ਮੁਕਤੁ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਕੋ ਹੋਈ ॥
jeevan mukat gurmukh ko ho-ee.
How rare are those who, as Gurmukh, become Jivan Mukta - liberated while yet alive.
ਪਰਮ ਪਦਾਰਥੁ ਪਾਵੈ ਸੋਈ ॥
param padaarath paavai so-ee.
They alone obtain the supreme treasure.
ਤ੍ਰੈ ਗੁਣ ਮੇਟੇ ਨਿਰਮਲੁ ਹੋਈ ॥
tarai gun maytay nirmal ho-ee.
Eradicating the three qualities, they become pure.
ਸਹਜੇ ਸਾਚਿ ਮਿਲੈ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਸੋਈ ॥੩॥
sehjay saach milai parabh so-ee. ||3||
They are intuitively absorbed in the True Lord God. ||3||

In plain words

Rare is the heart that becomes free while still fully alive — free right here, in this life, not someday far off. That heart finds the greatest treasure there is. The three swinging moods settle, it grows clear, and it slips easily into the truth of the One.

You can be free right here in this life — the three moods settle and you rest, clear, in the truth.
The deeper layer

You can be free right here, in this life, not someday far away.

The key words are jeevan mukat, "free while still alive." Freedom is not a prize waiting at the end of life. It is a way of being that is open now, in this body, on an ordinary Tuesday.

Such a rare person gains param padaarath, the greatest treasure. Trai gun maytay — the three gun, the three moods that swing us around, settle down. Think of restless, lazy, and calm, taking turns steering the mind. Then the heart becomes nirmal, clear like still water.

Sehjay saach milai — easily, with sahaj, natural calm, they meet the True One. Freedom here is a way of being alive.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to feel truly free right now, exactly where you are — not someday, somewhere else?
