Serve Below the Humble and Deep Peace Opens

ਹਰਿ ਦਾਸਨ ਕੋ ਦਾਸੁ ਸੁਖੁ ਪਾਏ ॥
har daasan ko daas sukh paa-ay.
The slave of the Lord's slave attains peace.
ਮੇਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪ੍ਰਭੁ ਇਨ ਬਿਧਿ ਪਾਇਆ ਜਾਏ ॥
mayraa har parabh in biDh paa-i-aa jaa-ay.
My Lord God is found in this way.
ਹਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਤੇ ਰਾਮ ਗੁਣ ਗਾਏ ॥੩॥
har kirpaa tay raam gun gaa-ay. ||3||
By the Grace of the Lord, one comes to sing the Glorious Praises of the Lord. ||3||

In plain words

The one who serves even the humblest servants of the One finds a deep peace. This is the way my One is found: by grace, the heart is lifted into song, praising the wonder of the One.

Serving humbly, below even the humble, opens a deep peace — and by grace the heart breaks into song.
The deeper layer

Serve the humble, and you find deep peace.

Har daasan ko daas sukh paa-ay — the servant of the One's servants finds sukh, peace. This is humility below humility. The Gurus love this way of standing. It levels every caste and every rank. Nobody is above anybody else.

Think of the kid who stays after the party to stack chairs, without being asked. There is a quiet happiness in that.

Mayraa har parabh in biDh paa-i-aa jaa-ay — this is the way my One is found. And har kirpaa tay raam gun gaa-ay — by grace, one sings the praises of the One. Praise is the fruit of grace received. It is not a chore someone makes you do. Humility and grace, together, open into song.

A Question to Sit With

Why do you think choosing the humblest place can bring more peace than trying to be on top?
