A Home Is Warm Only When Love Lives in It

Cursed, cursed is that home and family, in which the love of the Lord is not embraced.
so-ee hamaaraa meet jo har gun gaavai so-ay.
He alone is my friend, who sings the Glorious Praises of the Lord.
har naam binaa mai avar na ko-ay. ||5||
Without the Lord's Name, there is no other for me. ||5||

In plain words

A home and family can feel empty if love for the One never lives there. My real friend is the one who sings the wonder of the One — that's the friendship that lasts. Without the Name, there is no other treasure I need.

A home is only truly warm when love for the One lives in it; real friends are the ones who share that love.
The deeper layer

This one says a home is truly warm only when love lives in it.

Dharig Dharig garihu kutamb jit har pareet na ho-ay — here is the word Dharig again. It means a home can be empty. A garihu kutamb, a home and family, feels hollow if love for the One never lives there. That is a condition, not a curse on family. Guru Amar Das honors family life deeply in other hymns.

So-ee hamaaraa meet jo har gun gaavai so-ay — my real friend is the one who sings the praises of the One. True friendship is built on sharing that love. That is the friendship that lasts. It is like two friends on the same team, pulling for the same goal.

Har naam binaa mai avar na ko-ay — without the Name, I have no other. With the Name, nothing else is needed. So both home and friendship are drawn anew around love.

A Question to Sit With

What is it that makes a house actually feel like a warm home, and a person a real friend?
