Verse 4 of 9

Your Body and Breath Are Already His Gift

ਜਿਸ ਦਾ ਪਿੰਡੁ ਪਰਾਣ ਹੈ ਤਿਸ ਕੀ ਸਿਰਿ ਕਾਰ ॥
jis daa pind paraan hai tis kee sir kaar.
The body and the breath of life belong to the One - perform the greatest service to Him.
ਓਹੁ ਕਿਉ ਮਨਹੁ ਵਿਸਾਰੀਐ ਹਰਿ ਰਖੀਐ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਧਾਰਿ ॥੩॥
oh ki-o manhu visaaree-ai har rakhee-ai hirdai Dhaar. ||3||
Why forget Him from your mind? Keep the Lord enshrined in your heart. ||3||

In plain words

The body you live in and the very breath in your chest belong to the One — so the greatest thing you can do is offer yourself back in service. Why let that One slip from your mind? Keep it treasured, held close in your heart.

Your body and breath are already a gift from the One — so keep that One treasured in your heart.
The deeper layer

Your body and breath are gifts, so serving the Giver is the best work there is.

Jis daa pind paraan hai tis kee sir kaar — the body and breath belong to the One, so serving that One is the highest work. Pind is the body. Paraan is the breath of life. Kaar means work or service. Underneath is quiet thankfulness. Everything we are is already a gift.

Oh ki-o manhu visaaree-ai — why forget that One? It is a gentle, almost pleading question. Har rakhee-ai hirdai Dhaar — keep the One held close in your heart.

Think of a birthday present from someone who loves you. You want to say thank you. Remembering the One is like that. It is thankfulness, not a duty.

A Question to Sit With

If your breath and body are gifts, what would it look like to say "thank you" with how you live?
