The One You Feel Far From Is in Your Own Home

ਮਨ ਕਰਹਲਾ ਅਤਿ ਨਿਰਮਲਾ ਮਲੁ ਲਾਗੀ ਹਉਮੈ ਆਇ ॥
man karhalaa at nirmalaa mal laagee ha-umai aa-ay.
O camel-like mind, you were once very pure; the filth of egotism has now attached itself to you.
ਪਰਤਖਿ ਪਿਰੁ ਘਰਿ ਨਾਲਿ ਪਿਆਰਾ ਵਿਛੁੜਿ ਚੋਟਾ ਖਾਇ ॥੩॥
partakh pir ghar naal pi-aaraa vichhurh chotaa khaa-ay. ||3||
Your Beloved Husband is now manifest before you in your own home, but you are separated from Him, and you suffer such pain! ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

O camel-mind, you were once so pure and clear. Then the grime of the "me-first" voice settled over you.

And here is the ache of it. Your Beloved is right here with you, in your own home. Yet you feel separated, and that separation hurts.

The One you feel so far from is right here in your own home — the distance is only the grime, not a real gap.
The deeper layer

The One feels far away, but is right here in your own home.

Man karhalaa at nirmalaa — O camel-mind, you were at nirmalaa, very pure. Then mail, grime, stuck to you. That grime is haumai, the ego, the "me first" voice. But the first clearness was real. It can be found again.

Here is the heart of it. Partakh pir ghar naal pi-aaraa — the Beloved is right here, in your own home. The gap is not a real distance. It is a felt one. The grime makes it, not the One pulling away.

Think of looking all over the house for your glasses while they sit on your head. What you want is already with you.

Vichhurh chotaa khaa-ay — feeling apart, you are hurt. It is the ache of feeling far from what is actually near. And a longing like that already holds its own cure.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt far from someone who was standing right next to you? What made the distance?
