No Trick Finds the One; It Was Inside All Along

ਮਨ ਕਰਹਲਾ ਮੇਰੇ ਪ੍ਰੀਤਮਾ ਹਰਿ ਰਿਦੈ ਭਾਲਿ ਭਾਲਾਇ ॥
man karhalaa mayray pareetamaa har ridai bhaal bhaalaa-ay.
O my beloved camel-like mind, search for the Lord within your own heart.
ਉਪਾਇ ਕਿਤੈ ਨ ਲਭਈ ਗੁਰੁ ਹਿਰਦੈ ਹਰਿ ਦੇਖਾਇ ॥੪॥
upaa-ay kitai na labh-ee gur hirdai har daykhaa-ay. ||4||
He cannot be found by any device; the Guru will show you the Lord within your heart. ||4||

In plain words

O my beloved camel-mind, search for the One inside your own heart — look, and keep looking. No clever trick or gadget will ever turn it up. But the teacher will show you the One, right there within you all along.

No trick or gadget finds the One — but the teacher shows you it was inside your own heart all along.
The deeper layer

Man karhalaa mayray preetamaa — the address warms further: "my beloved" camel-mind. Har ridai bhaal bhaalaa-ay — search (bhaal) the One within the heart (ridai): the object of every pilgrimage is inward. Upaa-ay kitai na labh-ee — "by no device is it found" — no technique, method, or gimmick reaches it. Gur hirdai har daykhaa-ay — the teacher shows the One already within. The pilgrimage's destination turns out to be the pilgrim's own heart.

A Question to Sit With

What are you searching for "out there" that might actually be found by looking inward?
