Real Understanding Cuts the Fear of Death to Nothing

ਮਨ ਕਰਹਲਾ ਵਡਭਾਗੀਆ ਤੂੰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਰਤਨੁ ਸਮਾਲਿ ॥
man karhalaa vadbhaagee-aa tooN gi-aan ratan samaal.
O camel-like mind, you are so very fortunate; dwell upon the jewel of spiritual wisdom.
ਗੁਰ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਖੜਗੁ ਹਥਿ ਧਾਰਿਆ ਜਮੁ ਮਾਰਿਅੜਾ ਜਮਕਾਲਿ ॥੭॥
gur gi-aan kharhag hath Dhaari-aa jam maari-arhaa jamkaal. ||7||
You hold in your hands the sword of the Guru's spiritual wisdom; with this destroyer of death, kill the Messenger of Death. ||7||

In plain words

O so-fortunate mind, hold the jewel of true understanding close.

When the teaching puts wisdom in your hand like a bright sword, even the fear of death loses its power over you. Understanding cuts fear away.

Real understanding is a blade that cuts the fear of death down to nothing.
The deeper layer

The kharhag (sword) of gur gi-aan (the Guru's wisdom) is a classic Gurbani image: understanding is a blade that cuts through what binds us. The verse literally speaks of killing jamkaal, the Messenger of Death. Per our wellbeing rules we soften the terror-figure: the point is not a horror-story about death but the liberating truth that a mind rooted in understanding is no longer ruled by fear of death. The sword does not destroy a person; it dissolves the fear itself.

A Question to Sit With

What is a fear that got smaller once you truly understood something?
