Verse 6 of 9

Hold the One and Heaven Is a Peace You Rest In

ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਰਤਨੁ ਹਰਿ ਮਿਲੈ ॥
jaas japat ratan har milai.
Meditating on Him, the jewel of the Lord is obtained.
ਬਹੁਰਿ ਨ ਛੋਡੈ ਹਰਿ ਸੰਗਿ ਹਿਲੈ ॥
bahur na chhodai har sang hilai.
One is reconciled with the Lord, and shall not abandon Him again.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਈ ਬੈਕੁੰਠ ਵਾਸੁ ॥
jaas japat ka-ee baikunth vaas.
Meditating on Him, many acquire a home in the heavens.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਖ ਸਹਜਿ ਨਿਵਾਸੁ ॥੫॥
jaas japat sukh sahj nivaas. ||5||
Meditating on Him, one abides in intuitive peace. ||5||

In plain words

Hold the One in mind, and you find the real jewel -- and once you have it, you never let it go; you have found where you belong.

Hold the One in mind, and heaven is not somewhere far off; you rest, right now, in a deep and easy peace.

Hold the One in mind and you find the jewel you never let go -- and heaven turns out to be a peace you can rest in now.
The deeper layer

This one says that heaven is a peace you can rest in now.

Jaas japat ratan har milai — remembering Him, the jewel of the One is found. Ratan means jewel. The priceless thing is the One's own presence. Bahur na chhodai har sang hilai — once found, it is never let go. You hilai, grow close and at home, with the One, the way a new house slowly becomes home.

Then Guru Arjan moves heaven to a new place. Baikunth is heaven. Ka-ee baikunth vaas — many find a home in heaven. Sukh sahj nivaas — one lives in sahj, easy, settled peace. Both are described as something here and now, not a far-off afterlife. Think of a quiet evening at home after a busy day. That kind of peace is open to a settled mind right now.

A Question to Sit With

Where is a place -- or a feeling -- where you already feel completely at home?
