Hold the One and the Inner Fires Cannot Scorch

ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਇਹ ਅਗਨਿ ਨ ਪੋਹਤ ॥
jaas japat ih agan na pohat.
Meditating on Him, one is not affected by this fire.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਇਹੁ ਕਾਲੁ ਨ ਜੋਹਤ ॥
jaas japat ih kaal na johat.
Meditating on Him, one is not under the gaze of Death.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਤੇਰਾ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਮਾਥਾ ॥
jaas japat tayraa nirmal maathaa.
Meditating on Him, your forehead shall be immaculate.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਸਗਲਾ ਦੁਖੁ ਲਾਥਾ ॥੬॥
jaas japat saglaa dukh laathaa. ||6||
Meditating on Him, all pains are destroyed. ||6||

In plain words

Hold the One in mind, and the fires that used to burn you -- worry, anger, restlessness -- cannot touch you.

Hold the One in mind, and the fear of death loses its shadow; your face grows bright and clear, and every ache lifts away.

Hold the One in mind and the inner fires cannot scorch you, fear loses its shadow, and every ache lifts.
The deeper layer

This one says that when you remember the One, the fires inside cannot burn you.

Jaas japat ih agan na pohat — remembering Him, this fire does not touch you. Agan is fire. Here it is the fire inside: craving and deep hurt. A mind rooted in the One is not scorched by it. Think of a well-watered tree in a hot summer. The heat is real, but its leaves stay green.

Kaal na johat — Death does not eye you. Kaal is death. The picture is of Death watching someone. The simple truth inside it is that the fear of death loses its grip.

Nirmal maathaa means a clear forehead. It is an old picture of a calm, untroubled face. And saglaa dukh laathaa — all pain is lifted.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel calm inside, how does the same hard day look different?
