Hold the One and a Hidden Music Surfaces

ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਮੁਸਕਲੁ ਕਛੂ ਨ ਬਨੈ ॥
jaas japat muskal kachhoo na banai.
Meditating on Him, no difficulties are encountered.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਸੁਣਿ ਅਨਹਤ ਧੁਨੈ ॥
jaas japat sun anhat Dhunai.
Meditating on Him, one hears the unstruck melody.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਇਹ ਨਿਰਮਲ ਸੋਇ ॥
jaas japat ih nirmal so-ay.
Meditating on Him, one acquires this pure reputation.
ਜਾਸੁ ਜਪਤ ਕਮਲੁ ਸੀਧਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੭॥
jaas japat kamal seeDhaa ho-ay. ||7||
Meditating on Him, the heart-lotus is turned upright. ||7||

In plain words

Hold the One in mind, and difficulties stop piling up. The road smooths out.

Hold the One in mind, and you begin to hear a music with no player. It is a melody always sounding underneath everything. A good name grows around you. Your heart opens upward like a flower turning to the sun.

Hold the One in mind and the road smooths, a hidden music surfaces, and your heart opens upward like a flower to the sun.
The deeper layer

This one says that remembering the One lets a hidden music come to the surface.

Two of Gurbani's favorite pictures arrive here. Jaas japat sun anhat Dhunai — remembering Him, one hears the unstruck melody. Anhat means not struck. It is a sound no instrument makes, also called anhad naad. It is the hum of all that exists, which a still mind begins to notice. Think of lying awake at night and slowly hearing sounds that were there all along.

Then kamal seeDhaa ho-ay — the heart-lotus turns upright. Kamal is a lotus flower. In old Indian pictures, a closed heart hangs downward. Waking up turns it upward to bloom toward the light, like a sunflower in the morning.

Nirmal so-ay is a clean reputation, a good name. It does not come from showing off. It grows like the natural scent of a settled life. And the first line promises that difficulties do not pile up.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever gone quiet enough to notice a sound, or a calm, that was there all along?
