A Settled Heart Does Everything in Peaceful Ease

ਸਹਜੇ ਜਾਗਣੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਸੋਇ ॥
sehjay jaagan sehjay so-ay.
They awaken in peace and poise; they sleep in peace and poise.
ਸਹਜੇ ਹੋਤਾ ਜਾਇ ਸੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
sehjay hotaa jaa-ay so ho-ay.
That which is meant to be, automatically happens.
ਸਹਜਿ ਬੈਰਾਗੁ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਹਸਨਾ ॥
sahj bairaag sehjay hee hasnaa.
In peace and poise, they remain detached; in peace and poise, they laugh.
ਸਹਜੇ ਚੂਪ ਸਹਜੇ ਹੀ ਜਪਨਾ ॥੩॥
sehjay choop sehjay hee japnaa. ||3||
In peace and poise, they remain silent; in peace and poise, they chant. ||3||

In plain words

They wake in peace and sleep in peace. Whatever is meant to happen, they let happen, without clenching.

In peace they step back from the noise; in peace they laugh. In peace they stay quiet; in peace they remember the One.

A settled heart does everything -- waking, sleeping, laughing, resting -- in the same unforced, peaceful ease.
The deeper layer

This one says that a settled heart does everything in easy peace.

Here the word sehjay starts repeating: "in ease, in ease." It keeps coming back through the rest of the shabad. Sahaj means natural, unforced ease.

The point is that this ease is not saved for special quiet times. It soaks into everything. Sehjay jaagan sehjay so-ay — in ease they wake, in ease they sleep. It fills serious moments and laughing ones, silence and speech. Sahj bairaag sehjay hee hasnaa — in ease they step back from things, in ease they laugh.

Sehjay hotaa jaa-ay so ho-ay — whatever is meant to happen, happens, in ease. That is sahaj as trust. Think of a river that does not fight its own current. It just flows.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can do while completely relaxed that you used to do all tensed up?
