Verse 7 of 9

A Settled Heart Drinks the Name and Gives Freely

ਸਹਜੇ ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੁ ਪੀਓ ਨਾਮੁ ॥
sehjay amrit pee-o naam.
In peaceful poise, they drink in the Ambrosial Nectar of the Naam, the Name of the Lord.
ਸਹਜੇ ਕੀਨੋ ਜੀਅ ਕੋ ਦਾਨੁ ॥
sehjay keeno jee-a ko daan.
In peace and poise, they give to the poor.
ਸਹਜ ਕਥਾ ਮਹਿ ਆਤਮੁ ਰਸਿਆ ॥
sahj kathaa meh aatam rasi-aa.
Their souls naturally delight in the Lord's Sermon.
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਸੰਗਿ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਵਸਿਆ ॥੬॥
taa kai sang abhinaasee vasi-aa. ||6||
The Imperishable Lord abides with them. ||6||

In plain words

In peace they drink the sweetness of the Name. In peace they give generously to others.

Their whole being delights, easily, in the story of the One -- and the deathless One comes to live right there with them.

A settled heart drinks the sweetness of the Name and gives freely to others -- and the deathless One comes to dwell there.
The deeper layer

This one says that a settled heart drinks in the Name and gives freely.

Sehjay amrit pee-o naam — in ease they drink the nectar of the Name. Sehjay keeno jee-a ko daan — in ease they give to others. These two sit side by side on purpose. Sahaj flows outward as giving, not only inward as peace. Think of a fountain. When its top bowl is full, it spills over to fill the next one.

Sahj kathaa meh aatam rasi-aa — the soul delights in kathaa, the telling of the One's story.

And the fruit: taa kai sang abhinaasee vasi-aa — the One who never ends lives with them. Ease, giving, delight, and the Presence all belong to the same settled life.

A Question to Sit With

How might feeling deeply at peace inside make you more generous to the people around you?
