Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 271
Verse 8 of 9

Deep Peace, and a Music With No Player

ਸਹਜੇ ਆਸਣੁ ਅਸਥਿਰੁ ਭਾਇਆ ॥
sehjay aasan asthir bhaa-i-aa.
In peace and poise, they assume the unchanging position.
ਸਹਜੇ ਅਨਹਤ ਸਬਦੁ ਵਜਾਇਆ ॥
sehjay anhat sabad vajaa-i-aa.
In peace and poise, the unstruck vibration of the Shabad resounds.
ਸਹਜੇ ਰੁਣ ਝੁਣਕਾਰੁ ਸੁਹਾਇਆ ॥
sehjay run jhunkaar suhaa-i-aa.
In peace and poise, the celestial bells resound.
ਤਾ ਕੈ ਘਰਿ ਪਾਰਬ੍ਰਹਮੁ ਸਮਾਇਆ ॥੭॥
taa kai ghar paarbarahm samaa-i-aa. ||7||
Within their homes, the Supreme Lord God is pervading. ||7||

In plain words

In peace they come to rest in an unshakeable inner seat. In peace, a music with no player begins to sound.

In peace, a soft, glad ringing fills them like distant bells -- and in that inner home, the Supreme One is everywhere.

In deep peace, an unshakeable seat, a music with no player, and soft glad bells -- and the Supreme fills your inner home.
The deeper layer

This one says that deep peace brings a music with no player.

The list of ease rises to a quiet peak. Sehjay aasan asthir bhaa-i-aa — in ease, their seat becomes steady. Aasan asthir means an unmoving seat, a mind that no longer wobbles.

Sehjay anhat sabad vajaa-i-aa — in ease, the anhat sabad sounds. That is the "unstruck Word," a music no one is playing. Sehjay run jhunkaar suhaa-i-aa — in ease, a soft ringing like bells fills them with joy. Think of a song that keeps humming inside you long after it has stopped.

The verse ends where the shabad has been pointing all along. Taa kai ghar paarbarahm samaa-i-aa — in their own home, the inner life, the Supreme One is fully present.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt so still that a quiet gladness seemed to hum through you?
