Even the shining worlds of the great gods do not last. The heaven of Indra changes; the realm of Brahma the Creator does not stay fixed; even the world of Shiva passes in time.
The three great forces that spin the world, and all the powers within it, rise and fall in their turn.
This one says that even the shining worlds of the great gods do not last forever.
Guru Arjan now looks at the highest worlds in the old Indian stories called the Puranas. There is indar puree, the heaven of Indra. There is barahm puree, the realm of Brahma. There is siv puree, the world of Shiva. And he says even these will pass.
This is said with full respect. The gods are not made fun of. They are honored as vast and glorious. And that is exactly why the point is so strong. If even the heavens of the gods change, what here could we hold on to? Think of the tallest mountain on earth. Even it is slowly worn down by wind and rain.
The tarai gun, the three forces that keep the world turning, pass too, along with Maya, the pull of the passing world. All of them turn on the same wheel. The target is never any faith. It is time itself.
If even the mightiest things you can imagine will change, what does that tell you about what truly lasts?
