Until the Split Heals, Understanding Stays Clouded

ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਨ ਹੋਈ ॥
is maaree bin gi-aan na ho-ee.
Without killing this, one does not obtain spiritual wisdom.
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਜੂਠਿ ਨ ਧੋਈ ॥
is maaree bin jooth na Dho-ee.
Without killing this, one's impurity is not washed off.
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਮੈਲਾ ॥
is maaree bin sabh kichh mailaa.
Without killing this, everything is filthy.
ਇਸੁ ਮਾਰੀ ਬਿਨੁ ਸਭੁ ਕਿਛੁ ਜਉਲਾ ॥੭॥
is maaree bin sabh kichh ja-ulaa. ||7||
Without killing this, everything is a losing game. ||7||

In plain words

Without overcoming it, real understanding does not dawn; the inner smudges do not wash clean.

Without healing it, everything stays a little clouded, and life keeps feeling like a game you cannot win.

Until the inner split is healed, understanding stays clouded and life keeps feeling like a game you can't win.
The deeper layer

This one says that until the split heals, everything stays a little cloudy.

The list of what is missing goes on. Without letting go of dubidhaa, the split from the One:

Gi-aan, true understanding, does not dawn.

Jooth, the inner dirt, does not wash off. It is like a film of ego on the heart.

Everything stays mailaa, clouded and smudged.

And life feels ja-ulaa, a losing game.

Think of trying to see through a foggy car window by wiping only the outside. The fog is on the inside.

The point is not to feel hopeless. It is to find the cause. As long as the mind is split against itself, no amount of surface effort clears the cloud. The healing has to reach the root.

A Question to Sit With

Why might real understanding need a peaceful heart, not just a clever mind?
