Verse 4 of 9

Taking the Name to Heart Beats Countless Rituals

ਕੋਟਿ ਮਜਨ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਸੁਣਿ ਨਾਮ ॥
kot majan jaa kai sun naam.
Hearing the Naam, the Name of the Lord, is equal to millions of cleansing baths.
ਕੋਟਿ ਪੂਜਾ ਜਾ ਕੈ ਹੈ ਧਿਆਨ ॥
kot poojaa jaa kai hai Dhi-aan.
Meditating on it is equal to millions of worship ceremonies.
ਕੋਟਿ ਪੁੰਨ ਸੁਣਿ ਹਰਿ ਕੀ ਬਾਣੀ ॥
kot punn sun har kee banee.
Hearing the Word of the Lord's Bani is equal to giving millions in alms.
ਕੋਟਿ ਫਲਾ ਗੁਰ ਤੇ ਬਿਧਿ ਜਾਣੀ ॥੩॥
kot falaa gur tay biDh jaanee. ||3||
To know the way, through the Guru, is equal to millions of rewards. ||3||

In plain words

Simply hearing the Name is worth more than countless holy baths. Holding it in mind is worth more than endless ceremonies.

Listening to the words of the One is worth more than piles of charity given. And learning the real way, through the teaching, is worth more than any reward you could earn.

Simply taking the Name to heart is worth more than countless rituals, baths, and gifts.
The deeper layer

Taking the Name into your heart is worth more than millions of rituals.

The verse lists four huge piles. Kot majan — millions of cleansing baths in holy rivers. Kot poojaa — millions of worship ceremonies. Kot punn — millions of gifts to charity. Kot falaa — millions of rewards. Kot means ten million, a number too big to count.

Then it sets them beside something small and quiet. Sun naam — hearing the Name, the One's living presence. Dhi-aan — holding it in your mind. BiDh jaanee — learning the true way through the Guru. The small, inner thing weighs more.

Think of a birthday card. A handmade card full of real love can mean more than an expensive gift bought in a rush. This is not making fun of rituals. It is showing what gives anything its worth. A heart turned toward the One is worth more than any outer deal, however big.

A Question to Sit With

What is one small, quiet, sincere thing that might matter more than a big showy gesture?
