Verse 5 of 9

Remember the One and Your Grip Loosens

ਮਨ ਅਪੁਨੇ ਮਹਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਫਿਰਿ ਚੇਤ ॥
man apunay meh fir fir chayt.
Within your mind, over and over again, think of Him,
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਹਿ ਮਾਇਆ ਕੇ ਹੇਤ ॥
binas jaahi maa-i-aa kay hayt.
and your love of Maya shall depart.
ਹਰਿ ਅਬਿਨਾਸੀ ਤੁਮਰੈ ਸੰਗਿ ॥
har abhinaasee tumrai sang.
The Imperishable Lord is always with you.
ਮਨ ਮੇਰੇ ਰਚੁ ਰਾਮ ਕੈ ਰੰਗਿ ॥੪॥
man mayray rach raam kai rang. ||4||
O my mind, immerse yourself in the Love of the Lord. ||4||

In plain words

Deep in your own mind, again and again, remember the One -- and your grip on passing things loosens on its own.

The deathless One is always right here with you. So let your mind soak in that love, like cloth taking a color.

Remember the One again and again, and your grip on passing things loosens -- because the deathless One is already right here with you.
The deeper layer

Keep coming back to the One, and your grip on passing things loosens by itself.

Fir fir chayt means "remember again and again." This is simran, remembering the One, and it works like a rhythm. You drift away, and you come back. Like piano practice, each return makes it more natural.

Then something happens on its own. Binas jaahi maa-i-aa kay hayt — the love of maya fades away. Maya is the pull of things that shine for a while and then pass. You do not have to push it out. It simply gets outshone, the way a flashlight looks dim once the sun comes up.

Under all of this is a comfort. Har abhinaasee tumrai sang — the One who never ends is with you, right now and always. So rach raam kai rang — soak in that love. Here is the picture of dye again: white cloth left in the color until it goes all the way through.

A Question to Sit With

What is a good thought you could gently return to, again and again, until it colors everything?
