Whatever You Build on Pretending Comes Undone

ਨਾਮੁ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਕਰੇ ਅਨ ਕਾਜ ॥
naam ti-aag karay an kaaj.
One who renounces the Naam and engages in other occupations,
ਬਿਨਸਿ ਜਾਇ ਝੂਠੇ ਸਭਿ ਪਾਜ ॥੪॥
binas jaa-ay jhoothay sabh paaj. ||4||
shall see all of his false pretenses fall away. ||4||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

If I let go of the Name and pour myself into everything else instead, all the shiny pretenses I built eventually just... come undone.

Whatever you build on pretending will quietly come undone on its own.
The deeper layer

Whatever you build on pretending comes undone in the end.

Naam ti-aag karay an kaaj — leaving the Name, someone throws themselves into an kaaj, other work. Binas jaa-ay jhoothay sabh paaj — all their false coverings fall away. Paaj is pretense, a mask.

Think of a sandcastle built right at the water's edge. It can look grand, but the next wave takes it. What is built without a real center does not hold. This is simply how things go. It is not a threat of doom.

A Question to Sit With

What is something 'shiny' you've seen fall apart because it had no real substance?
