Verse 7 of 9

The Tangles Are Made of Our Own Forgetting

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਜਿਨਿ ਮਨਿ ਨ ਆਰਾਧਾ ॥
har kaa naam jin man na aaraaDhaa.
One whose mind does not contemplate the Name of the Lord
ਚੋਰ ਕੀ ਨਿਆਈ ਜਮ ਪੁਰਿ ਬਾਧਾ ॥੬॥
chor kee ni-aa-ee jam pur baaDhaa. ||6||
is bound like a thief, in the City of Death. ||6||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

When my mind never turns toward the Name, I end up feeling tangled and trapped. I am bound up by my own forgetting. And all along, the Name could set me free.

The tangles we get caught in are made of our own forgetting — and can be undone.
The deeper layer

Forgetting the One ties us up in knots of our own making, and the Name can set us free.

Har kaa naam jin man na aaraadhaa — someone whose mind does not dwell on the Name of the One. Chor kee ni-aa-ee jam pur baadhaa — is tied up like a thief in jam pur, the city of death. That is the verse's picture. The feeling inside it is being tangled and trapped by our own forgetting.

Think of a kite string that knots itself up in the wind. Nobody else tied it. The knot is self-made, and the way out is always there: the Name.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel 'stuck,' how much of the trap did you build yourself?
