The Grandest Show Is Thin as Air Without Heart

ਲਾਖ ਅਡੰਬਰ ਬਹੁਤੁ ਬਿਸਥਾਰਾ ॥
laakh adambar bahut bisthaaraa.
Hundreds of thousands of ostentatious shows and great expanses
ਨਾਮ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠੇ ਪਾਸਾਰਾ ॥੭॥
naam binaa jhoothay paasaaraa. ||7||
- without the Naam, all these displays are false. ||7||

In plain words

I could put on hundreds of grand shows and spread myself wide and impressive. But without the Name, all that display is just empty spread, thin as air.

The grandest show in the world is thin as air if it has no real heart.
The deeper layer

The grandest show is empty as air without a real center.

Laakh adambar bahut bisthaaraa — laakh adambar, a hundred thousand showy displays, and bahut bisthaaraa, a huge spread. Naam binaa jhoothay paasaaraa — without the Name, all that spread is jhoothay, false.

The Gurus come back to this often. Sach is what is real and lasts. Jhooth is what is false and fades. Grand shows without a real center are jhooth. They wash off like cheap dye in the rain. Think of fireworks: dazzling for a moment, then only smoke.

A Question to Sit With

What is more impressive to you — a big flashy show, or something quietly real?
