The Name Isn't Won by Trying; It's a Gift Offered

ਹਰਿ ਕਾ ਨਾਮੁ ਸੋਈ ਜਨੁ ਲੇਇ ॥
har kaa naam so-ee jan lay-ay.
That humble being repeats the Name of the Lord,
ਕਰਿ ਕਿਰਪਾ ਨਾਨਕ ਜਿਸੁ ਦੇਇ ॥੮॥੧੦॥
kar kirpaa naanak jis day-ay. ||8||10||
O Nanak, whom the Lord blesses with His Mercy. ||8||10||

In plain words

And here's the gentle secret: the one who truly holds the Name is the one grace has quietly opened. It comes as a gift of kindness — always offered, waiting for you to receive it.

The Name isn't won by trying hard — it's a gift of mercy, received when the heart is opened.
The deeper layer

The Name is not a prize you win by trying. It is a gift, given in kindness.

Har kaa naam so-ee jan lay-ay — that person takes up the Name of the One. Kar kirpaa naanak jis day-ay — says Nanak, the one to whom it is given, in grace. Kirpaa means grace, mercy.

The Name is not a trophy for effort. It is a gift, received when the heart is open. Think of a hand held out open. A closed fist can't take a gift. This hymn has many stern lines, but it ends on pure grace. That turns every warning before it into an invitation home.

A Question to Sit With

What good thing in your life came not because you earned it, but as a gift?
